Pissed off

Slashdot points out a CNN report on changes to
the planned economic stimulus bill (the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 [PDF]) that will remove the $2 billion allocated to broadband development. The changes also eliminated smaller amounts allocated to NASA, the National Institute for Standards and Technology, and the National Science Foundation. $16 billion in school construction funding was removed, as well as another $3.5 billion for higher education construction. A variety of environmental projects were also cut or reduced (half of the $7 billion set aside for energy-efficient federal buildings, half of the $600 million for hybrid federal vehicles), and over $8 billion in health-related provisions are gone. The bill will likely go to vote in the Senate on Tuesday.

This pisses me off. My pet projects in the plan are the school constrution funding. Now that's been cut. Such projects would put to work tons of blue collar people and when the recession is over we'd have bright shiny new schools (or at least repaired old schools). Even when I was a 5th grader I was upset that the schools I went to were so energy inefficient (heater putting out too much heat this winter? open a window!). There's tons of improvements that could be made that would have a big long-term payoff.

I'm not sure I like this bill any more. Not that $16 is a big percent of the bill, and they certainly could do that later as a seperate bill (they could create a "better use of energy in america" bill) but it sucks.
