I want to make more friends that live within walking distance of my house. (OKCupid news)

I tried OkCupid but I feel weird writing to people that I don’t match just to say “will you be my friend?”

I’ve created a meetup for OKCupid users in Bloomfield, NJ. I hope this is something I can more broadly advertise. We’ll meet once a month at a bar. I steal this idea from someone that is doing this in NYC.

To promote the group, I’m clicking on people’s profiles so they see me as a “stalker” (In OKC terminology, that’s just someone that has viewed their profile, nothing bad). Hopefully they’ll see 07003_MeetUp in their “recent stalkers” list, click on it, and see the profile.

The meetup is listed here: Bloomfield-area OKCUPID Users Meetup

If you know people that are in the Bloomfield, Montclair, Glenn Ridge, Belleville area and are OkCupid users (or want to be... it’s free!) please direct them my way!

Interesting, I've been having a similar urge as well. And have been looking up lots of things on Meetup.com - I have a drumming circle and a soap-making class scheduled for this Sunday!

Craigslist is also excellent for doing this. I started a meetup group via CL a few years ago, and 60 people showed up to the first meeting. About 40 continued showing up to subsequent things, and a number of them became my friends.

Nods, seconded... I began a successful beadwork group that way, and still know a couple of the folks :)

If you lived closer, I'd be happy to hang out!

Unfortunately for these purposes, Joe and I are still in that phase of parenting where it's close-to-impossible for us to do spontaneous kid-free outings, but with a little planning I know we'd both be up for neighborly socializing. And I can't tell you how much I love the idea of more of a local community. I have one good friend in Belleville, one in Bloomfield, and after that it's probably a 20 minute road trip to get to folks I know.

Now for the next step -- keeping the house tidy enough that if people stopped by, we could actually let them in... :)

We figure that by having it on the same night every month (3rd thursday) people will eventually be able to plan for it.

Hope you can make it in January!

Grin, I've been wrangling with that one lately...

One possible approach is to move your existing friends into your neighborhood. I succeeded at that years ago. Of course, we were in our early 20's, so it was much easier then.
