Review: Passing Strange (on Broadway)
I saw the new broadway musical “Passing Strange” with [info]quietchris and [info]salliesandbags on Thursday night. It was awesome. Tickets are still cheap, as it hasn’t been “discovered” yet. I highly recommend you see it.

It is the story of a young black man that grew up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood who leaves for Amsterdam to become a musician and artist. He later goes to Berlin to explore the very different scene there.

The story is semi-autobiographical. The “narrator” is “Stew” and he tells the story of his life as he plays guitar. People sing and dance and act out what he is saying. The main charactor (himself as a youth) often shares the microphone with him. The band is on stage and shares part of the acting duties.

I loved the show. While I enjoyed the music and singing, I thought the writing was the strongest part of the show. It was funny and somewhat self-referential. That is, the show didn’t take itself too seriously even though it was powerfully talking about important serious issues. You’d have to see it to understand what I mean.

This is a very interesting review to me. Early in my process of working with the crazy director producer (wow, that was Freudian), he went to see this and said it was AWFUL. At the time, I was still under the delusion of thinking he knew anything about theater, so I just believed him. Now that I know he's insane and has NO IDEA how theater works at ALL, I should go back and revisit opinions he gave me and question them. I'll start with his opinion of this show. :)

It goes both ways: I'm no professional critic.

Believe me, neither was he. :) And I find the opinions of professional critics only marginally useful. They aren't the majority of my target audience. Audience members are.

I just went to check for tickets, because I was curious what you meant by "cheap". And now I'm REALLY curious what you meant by "cheap", since this show is selling at standard Broadway prices. Orchestra seats are over $100, and other seats range from $30-ish to $60-ish. That's pretty standard.

Did you find a deal somewhere different than just Telecharge?

Mine were $55 including ticketmaster charges, I think.

The balcony seats we had were, I believe, better than orchestra since you could see the dancing better.
